Wild Mountain Thyme trailer: Oh God, Oh God Why?

If you want to make your ears bleed and question everything you ever thought about film, this is the movie for you.

The trailer for an upcoming film from John Patrick Shanley – of Moonstruck with Cher and Nicolas Cage – has caused quite a stir on Twitter, particularly from Irish users. In the great Hollywood tradition, Wild Mountain Thyme is comprised almost entirely of a cast who are very clearly not Irish. Not only that, but even Jamie Dornan the one actor who is Irish, somehow also butchered his attempt at an accent. Is this some sort of early April fools’ prank?

Wild Mountain Thyme focuses on an Irish family which falls apart when the patriarch, played by Christopher Walken, makes the decision to hand the family farm over to an American – played by Jon Hamm who, thank god, is speaking in his own accent. Emily Blunt plays the lovesick neighbour and childhood friend of Jamie Dornan’s Anthony, Walken’s gormless son.

I was shocked when I realised that this film is meant to take place in modern day Ireland, as the characters look and speak as if they’re straight out of a famine film. And although I love Emily Blunt, I honestly wanted to turn the trailer off every time her character opened her mouth.

Why is it so hard for directors to hire Irish actors to play Irish characters? You wouldn’t see this for most other nationalities. Why does the Irish accent constantly get butchered? Is it something we did?

If you’re looking for a laugh, I highly recommend you go and check out some of the memes on Twitter from Irish users reacting to the trailer. Even though we all know we’re going to watch it - and hate every second of it – this trailer is probably one of the most frustrating but amusing things to come out of this second lockdown.
