'Bridgerton': A 19th century ‘Gossip Girl’?

Netflix just dropped the trailer for Bridgerton, a new series premiering on the 25th  of December. Happy Christmas!

The series is narrated through a gossip column which is the central focus of the show, written by a mysterious Lady Whistledown, who in the trailer proclaims: ‘You don’t know me, and never shall.’ There is a tense chill in the air over this village, while Whistledown begins to reveal scandal and put the subjects on blast by naming them. This is disruptive to the oncoming social season in Bridgerton, when young ladies are looking for a ‘match’. Lady Whistledown promises to discover and announce any potential scandals that might occur.

The bright colourful pastels and almost dream-like cinematography seen in the trailer remind me of Emma (2020). But it has to be said that what this trailer really made me think of was Gossip Girl, a series based on practically the exact same premise except it was focused on teenage American socialites in the mid 2000s. A hugely popular show, it would be no surprise if someone tried to emulate it. Although Bridgerton does seem to have a lot of style and attitude, and I’m excited to see where they take things. The show is based on a best-selling series of books by Julia Quinn, and the enigmatic Lady Whistledown is voiced by the wonderful Julie Andrews. And I was also delighted to see Nicola Coughlan from Derry Girls pop up in the trailer, playing a character called Penelope Featherington.

We will have to wait and see where Bridgerton takes us, and personally I am very excited to see where that is – or, at the very least, to drool over the gorgeous visuals.
