The Best Scary Movies to Watch During Halloween This Lockdown

Unfortunately, we’ve been thrown once again into a full lockdown here in Ireland. Six more weeks of staring at the wall and trying to figure out if your favourite place to go is within a 5km radius. But we can still do our best to have fun indoors, and coming up to Halloween, there’s no better way to do that than to snuggle up with some sweets and some creepy, festive movies. Here are some of the best Halloween movies to binge during the next few days (all available on Netflix UK & Ireland:

1.    The Addams Family

This 1991 flick is perfect to set the Halloween vibe. Along with a burst of nostalgia, it’s the perfect film to sit down with while you’re munching into a bag of sweets. The animated version is also on Netflix, which is also a black comedy delight.

2.    House at the End of the Street

This film focuses on Elissa, who moves to a new town with her mother to discover that their neighbour’s house was the site of a grisly double murder. Starring Jennifer Lawrence, it’s a little bit cheesy but I have to admit, it got a lot of jumps out of me.

3.    Corpse Bride

This Tim Burton classic is one of my personal favourites. If you like The Nightmare Before Christmas, you’ll love Corpse Bride. It’s sure to creep out viewers of any age, and the design and visuals are stunning.

4.    Monster House

This is another film that, while mainly based at kids, is enjoyable for anyone. I remember seeing it in the cinema and being genuinely disturbed. Focused on a group of kids trying to defeat an evil, possessed house on their street, it’s equal parts hilarious and terrifying.

5.    The Babysitter

Hear me out. This is one of those movies that’s so bad, that it’s good. And it’s actually pretty funny. Cole, a young pre-teen, stays up past his bedtime to discover that his babysitter is part of a cult. It’s cheesy and fun, and it’s perfect for bingeing while eating a load of crap.

6.    A Quiet Place

This is actually one of my favourite movies. Set in a post-alien invasion world, a family try to survive while surrounded by monsters that can only find them through sound. The family cannot make any sound, communicating through sign language. It’s absolutely worth watching.

7.    Orphan

This is another silly one, but it’s still pretty good. Kate and John decide to adopt a little girl after losing a baby, but their new daughter Esther turns out to be – well, evil. Of course. But it’s a fun watch.

8.    Creep

Like A Quiet Place, this is a favourite of mine. A cameraman answers an ad to help a weird guy shoot a home video in his cabin in the woods. Sound creepy? It is. The movie gets progressively weirder and, although I’m not a huge fan of found footage films, this one is definitely worth the watch.

9.    The Conjuring

Set in 1970, two paranormal investigators visit a secluded farmhouse to try and expel a supernatural presence. I think everyone knows this movie but it’s the perfect watch for a time like this, when we’re all stuck in our houses. Definitely won’t give you nightmares.

    Hush

Another film that will make you glance over your shoulder while in quarantine. We meet Maddie, a deaf writer who lives in a house in the woods (always a great idea) and begins to be terrorized by a masked killer outside. It’s a great, solid scary movie, and is also perfect for a Halloween movie night.

A movie night with fluffy pyjamas and lots of sweets will do us all a world of good. No matter what's going on in the world, there's nothing better than a bit of escapism, and a bit of scary fun, to remind us what Halloween is all about.
