'The Devil All the Time' Review
Directed by Antonio Campos, and starring big names such as Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson and Sebastian Stan, The Devil All the Time captured my imagination from the opening scene. The film is a multi-generational story about how religion and corrupted faith affects intertwined families and communities, with a rotten core of evil running throughout. This evil is palpable in each scene, in each tense moment. I absolutely loved it.
The story is rich, with dark themes and characters that you can’t tear your eyes away from. There are stunning performances from not only the main cast, but characters such as Roy Laferty, an insane preacher, will stick in your mind for a long time after viewing. The performance from Harry Melling – Harry Potter’s Dudley Dursley – is breath taking.
There are almost too many characters and storylines to keep track of, but the film just about hits the right balance before things get overwhelming or confusing. Not only is this a terrifying story of corruption, there are also some very darkly humorous moments.
There isn’t much else to say about such an intense, detailed story except that it’s one of the best films from Netflix that I’ve watched in a while. If you’re looking for something dark and thought-provoking to watch underneath a pile of blankets during lockdown, then this is the movie for you.
