My Hopes for the Emmys 2020

This year, the Emmys will be held virtually. Meaning that we may see stars making acceptance speeches from their living room, offices or toilet. Probably not the last one.

After reviewing the nominations, I’ve compiled a list of nominees that I’m hoping are successful. This list does not feature every category, but the ones I am absolutely certain deserve to win.

1.     Outstanding Comedy Series – Dead To Me

Dead To Me is a dark, hilarious series that premiered in May 2019, starring Christina Applegate and the remarkable Linda Cardellini. In a twisted celebration of female friendship, family, and murder, it is one of the funniest and most engaging shows I’ve watched in a long time, and I believe it deserves to win.

2.     Outstanding Drama Actress – Zendaya, Euphoria

Starting out on Disney Channel, Zendaya has now blossomed into an incredible, multi-faceted actress who shone as drug-addicted teenager Rue on Euphoria. The smash-hit was based on an Israeli TV series of the same name which came out in 2013 and was critically acclaimed for the acting chops of its cast, particularly Zendaya herself, who in my opinion absolutely deserves to win in this category.

3.     Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series – Betty Gilpin, GLOW

Betty Gilpin gave an outstanding performance in the latest season of GLOW. She has incredible range, and the episode that featured her character’s descent into an eating disorder was haunting. She has the comedy skills as well as the ability to carry heavy subject matter, and for that reason I believe she deserves this award.

4.     Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series – Paul Mescal, Normal People

Paul Mescal gave a grounded and moving performance in this limited series based on Sally Rooney’s bestselling novel. In his role as Connell, Mescal provoked emotion in every viewer, with a subtle and believable portrayal of a shy rugby player. Despite the media’s continuous error, Paul Mescal is Irish, not British, and it would be incredible to see him win this award for us.

5.     Outstanding Animated Program – Bojack Horseman

The final season of Bojack Horseman was unforgettable. It’s always difficult to finish a series, especially one so poignant as Bojack, and after six seasons you might wonder how the writers would live up to expectations. But they did so beautifully, and I was impressed at how satisfied I was with the conclusion to such an iconic series, which truly deserves to win in this category.

The 72nd Primetime Emmys will be held on September 21st.
